5 Reminders From God’s Word For Those That Are Single

Published by on March 28th, 2020.

Here are five reminders from God’s Word for those who are single in this life.

Never Forsaken

I cannot understand how single people feel, so I won’t pretend to say, “I understand” because I don’t, but I do know that God’s Word says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb 13:5b), and never means jus that; never! There are times I am sure single people feel forsaken, but we know that God’s Word is always true.

Your life for the Lord

The Apostle Paul writes that “Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called” (1st Cor 7:20), and “To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (1st Cor 7:8-9), and so sisters and “brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God” (1st Cor 7:24). Not everyone can live this out as Paul says, if they cannot control their passions, it’s “better to marry.”

Never Alone

The Bible says of Adam, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Gen 2:18), and you don’t have to guess why this isn’t good. We are made for relationship and need one another, but for single people who may have few, if any, potential mates, there may be no lonelier place to be. The truth is, you are never alone, even if you’re single, because God is with you every step of the way.

A Special Calling

Jeremiah was called directly by God, even before he was born (Jer 1), and so God told him, “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place” (Jer 16:2). How would you like Jeremiah’s calling? He was called but told they won’t listen to you and knowing the future of Israel, he was not to bear any children either as God told him that the people “shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth” (Jer 16:4).

Not Forgotten

God never forgets…and even if it might feel like it, God has not forgotten the single people in the Body of Christ, the church. One thing that married people should be aware of is that every time they ask why someone isn’t married, they are insinuating that they haven’t even tried, but this is rarely the case. It hurts when we ask single people, “Why aren’t you married yet?” That’s not our business and it only makes single people feel worse.

Conclusion

Please make sure to include single people in your holiday plans. Holidays are very difficult for those wo are single, so for the single person, Paul writes, “I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband” (1st Cor 7:32-34). God is for you…no matter if you’re married or not. I cannot imagine how painful that must be, however, God never wastes suffering. He will use anyone who submits to Him, single or married.
