4 Uplifting Scriptures For Those Tired and Weary

Published by on April 1st, 2020.

Everyone gets tired and grows weary in this world. Even Jesus did in His humanity. What 4 Bible verses can help you get through these times?

Come to Jesus for Rest

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I love these verses because I too often try to carry the loads on my own shoulders.  A yoke is a device where the burden of the weight was spread out among two or more oxen and so the image is that those who are weary and burdened should come to Christ because He alone can give us rest.  He desires to take the weight off of you and to place it upon His own strong shoulders.  His yoke rests upon broad shoulders, not just because He was a strong carpenter but because He is also the Mighty God of which nothing is too hard.

Renew your Strength

Isaiah 40:30-31 “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Even in my own youth, now decades away from today, I grew tired. I grew weary of living a sinful life that never satisfied.  Sin makes us tired and I was so weary trying to live my life without God.  For those who “hope in the Lord” God will “renew their strength” and only then are they able to “soar on wings like eagles” and “run and not grow weary” and “not be faint.”  Have you ever seen an eagle soar?  They seem to do so effortlessly.  That is the image I get when I read these verses.  I need that strength.  Don’t you?

Take a Nap

First Kings 19:7-9 “The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”  So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.  There he went into a cave and spent the night.”

Here is something that I should take to heart.  Recently I had a 17 hour work day, being a bi-vocational pastor and that was followed by a 10 hour work day.  By the end of that day, I was like Elijah and having my own personal pity party but no one wanted to come to my party. I can’t blame them. I get so fatigued at times that I grow despondent.  I want to be honest with you so that you’ll be honest with yourself. Sometime we simply need to take a nap.  Leave the phone off the hook.  Turn off the cell phone. Get some rest and eat some nutritious food.  God knows that we are frail and only dust (Psalm 103:14).  Give yourself a break and get some rest like Elijah did.

Think of Eternity

Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Sometimes I counsel so many people and listen to so many people’s burdens that I feel like I have been a drink offering that’s been poured out onto the ground.  I feel emptied of all my strength.  Often I have no one to “fill me up.”  That’s why this verse is so important to me.  I do become weary in doing good for others.  In pouring myself out to help others, I sometimes simply collapse on the floor filling completely emptied like a glass that has all of its contents spilled out so I need to remember that the harvest of the labor of love is not reaped in this life but in the life to come.
